intimate, playful stories about ideas that matter

sometimes I work

sometimes I don't
Hi, I’m Kim –
And I tell stories about ideas. Stories that bring important, heady concepts down to earth, by making them intimate, visceral and playful. Into audio you can feel. For the past seven years, I’ve done this as a reporter and producer for NPR, Reply All, The WSJ, TED, and Proxy (by the former host of NPR’s Invisibilia), among other outlets. Here are a few of the pieces I’ve made, from investigations into modern corporations to tiny human dramas.

CLEAR: How a private company inched its way into America’s airport security system—and what that reveals about the growing privatization of our public spaces.
Reported for Up First, NPR
An attempt to resolve a seven-year-long Wikipedia edit fight, over one very dumb joke on the page of one very serious professor.
Reported for Reply All, Gimlet (Segment starts at 26:48)
A whistleblower inside the federal government found that DOGE representatives appeared to have taken sensitive data and covered their tracks.
Produced for Up First, NPR
Across my work, there’s one theme I often return to: how people connect in a world that pulls us apart. A lot of my stories dig into the social science that helps us understand the messy edges of modern connection.

A mother who doesn’t understand why her kids have cut her off, talks to a daughter who has done the same to her parents.
Reported for Proxy, Radiotopia
Two estrangement therapists grapple with a recurring mystery: why does communication seem to break down in one very specific way, across so many estranged families?
Reported for Proxy, Radiotopia
War, misinformation, and how to stay connected to people who disagree so deeply it’s as if they live in another reality.
Reported for The Pulse, WHYY
As we grow increasingly attached to AI, how "human" do we want chatbots to seem?
Produced for Up First, NPR
Beyond making podcasts, I've also consulted on podcasts for Bain & Co and OpenAI. I've taught audio students at NYU. I hold an MFA in narrative journalism from NYU and a Bachelor’s in psychology from UCLA. I adore folk music and running in forests and soft yellow light, but my favorite thing to do is kick it with my friends. I live in Brooklyn with seven roommates.
